Instagram hashtags in 2026: the 5-hashtag limit and how to pick the right ones

Instagram now allows only 5 hashtags per post. How hashtags work today, and a simple formula to pick the best 5 for a local business.

For years the advice was "use all 30 hashtags". That no longer works, or is even allowed. Since December 2025, Instagram lets you use only 5 hashtags on a post or Reel. Hashtags you put in the first comment count towards the same 5.
